[...] Two days back, Etisalat was in news, when it approached telecom authorities (DoT). Reason: to check possibility of surrendering spectrum & get the cash back. Now again today, the news broke out that, the company is checking the possibility of investing in India’s sixth largest telecom operator by subscriber count- Idea Cellular. Though Idea hasn’t commented officially about the story, the possibility of selling stakes can’t be ruled out, as far as Idea is concerned.
For new entrants, price bargain was only option to start with . Offering congestion free network, coupled with 1paisa and 1/2 paisa per second pricing got off huge start to few start-up telcos. But then sustaining the momentum isn't always easy. Then offering differentiated/innovative services with price advantage was tried. DoCoMo brought in per sec billing while Uninor brought 24x7 discount plan etc.
In short, new entrants business was focussed towards getting max subscriber by offering differentiating services/plan with cheap rates. But that's not always enough.

well, uninor has presented the plan in a different way. now they are offering disount on per sec call and vodaphone has tried to copy the idea as they are offering discount upto 90% but not on per sec call. so uninor , in a way, have challenged the market.

I agree with you. It might be difficult to understand how it works, but in any case, current discount is always displayed on screen before you connect. That's more than enough.

The dynamic plan from uninor has been quite effective. The only problem could be that it might be difficult to understand as it is quite a different kind of offer but very good plan indeed.

the war of tarrif would go on much deeper when VOIP will penetrate indian markets.

had been to US, there i saw that almost all people use VOIP for long distance calls which just cost penny for a minute to india

i used services of www.cetafone.com
which was really great in service and cheap in rates
