Lately, I was checking out Best/Unlimited GPRS Tariffs deals across India, but unfortunately, my search couldn’t produce anything valid as such- except few claims and reports. Offering unlimited GPRS isn’t everybody piece of cake and probably, that’s the reason, I decided to quench my data thirst on what’s offered to me. But why am I pondering over Unlimited Data on move these days?

Reason is simple- to cut my telephone bills. After moving to Maharashtra State from Delhi, the need to cut my mobile phone bills is even stronger. My strong and of course weak point is- data access. But despite my decent attempt to search good GPRS deals in state, I failed to find a good starting point. Most of tariff plans in India concentrate too much on voice  tariffs. There’s little flexibility over Data Plans. More over, access to data is either limited in context of Speed or Download/Upload Data limit. Then the question comes- how should I be planning my mobile phone budget?

The best I can go with selecting tariffs based on my calling/data needs. But results aren’t very encouraging. So finally, I ended up with Vodafone CUG connections, but I had little information about accompanying GPRS/EDGE Data Rate plan. To avoid messing up my bills, I finally decided to buy dedicated Airtel broadband at home and keep voice calling limited to mobile. This costs me around 1K+ extra here. Then, I have one BSNL landline connection at home, which is quite handy when I find mobile indoor network patchy. In all, I use Mobile+Landline for Voice calls & broadband ADSL for Data access. The funny part is- I have tied up with three service providers for all this and will have to track issues with each one of them separately. A Real Mess!

The story doesn’t end here. My phone bills are not subsiding at all. Despite usage cut and tariff plan change, there’s little to cheer about. And where do I go from here? I am still not using GPRS i.e. Internet on move, which was my prime concern. But after experiencing poor GPRS Speeds across various networks, I have decided to drop my plan.

May be we are moving towards 100 million subscriber mark, but life is little simpler. In fact, despite staying in telecom profession for quite some time, I still find tariff wars pretty useless, when it comes to simplifying consumer headaches & of course cutting Mobile Bills!
