Cisco, the global networking giant, has released the 2012 edition of Mobile VNI (Virtual Network Index Report) and the numbers forecasted are really mind-blowing to believe at first place.
Key takeaway of the report are summarized below:
- Mobile data traffic will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 78 percent from 2011 to 2016, reaching 10.8 exabytes per month by 2016.
- By the end of 2012, the number of mobile-connected devices will exceed the number of people on earth, and by 2016 there will be 1.4 mobile devices per capita. There will be over 10 billion mobile-connected devices in 2016, including machine-to-machine (M2M) modules-exceeding the world’s population at that time (7.3 billion).
- The average mobile network connection speed (189 kbps in 2011) will exceed 2.9 megabits per second (Mbps) in 2016.
- In 2016, a 4G connection will generate 9 times more traffic on average than a non-4G connection.
- Mobile video will increase 25-fold between 2011 and 2016, accounting for over 70 percent of total mobile data traffic by the end of the forecast period.
- The average smartphone will generate 2.6 GB of traffic per month in 2016, a 17-fold increase over the 2011 average of 150 MB per month. Aggregate smartphone traffic in 2016 will be 50 times greater than it is today, with a CAGR of 119 percent.
In fact 2011 broke some Data Traffic records. Global data traffic in 2011 (600 petabytes) was eight times higher than total global traffic in 2000 (75 petabytes). At the same time Android phones are started consuming more data than iPhone users towards the end of 2011 (US & Europe).
By 2016, Asia-Pacific & Europe combine will generate more than half of the data traffic, the growing indication of data usage in Asia-Pacific region, of which more than 80{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} data traffic will be generated by mobile devices such as Smartphone, Tablets etc.
There’re two key observations, which I would like to highlight from Indian perspective, before we end the discussion.
- By 2016, 22{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} of the data traffic will be offloaded to fixed network devices from mobile devices, which signify that home Wi-Fi gateway penetration will be on decline in developing countries, while users will rely more on mobile data usage.
- Cloud Web sites such as Youtube, Facebook, Netflix etc will grow significantly, claiming the importance of Cloud Computing in coming years.Indiahas more to gain from Cloud from reducing the cost of IT Infra and also improving the user experience of services.
