Q12010 Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Report & Mobile OS Duopoly assertions!

Yesterday Gartner Research released its Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Q1 2010 report and according to that, worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totaled 314.7 million units in Q1-2010, which is 17{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} rise as compared to Q1 2009. What’s more interesting- RIM entered into top five handset manufacturers!

Let’s take short review of the report here:-

  • Smartphone sales to end user reached to 54.3 million units, an increase in 48.7{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} as compared to Q1-2009.
  • In the first quarter of 2010, Nokia’s mobile phone sales to end users reached 110.1 million units, a 1.2 per cent decline in market share year-on-year. This could be perhaps due to lack of killer device in high end segment.
  • Samsung sold 64.9 million devices in the first quarter of 2010, an increase of 26.3 per cent year-on-year.
  • RIM’s mobile phone sales reached 10.6 million units in the first quarter of 2010, a 45.9 per cent increase year-on-year. With this sales figure, RIM made its debut into the top five worldwide mobile handset manufacturers ranking.
  • Sony Ericsson’s trouble continued but sold enough units to remain in the top five mobile handset manufacturers. Its market share also declined 2.3 percentage points in the first quarter of 2010.
  • The first quarter of 2010 was Apple’s strongest quarter yet, which placed the company in the No. 7 position with a 112.2 per cent increase in mobile devices sales.
  • Outside top five manufacturers, Hong-Kong based G-five made its debut into top 10, grabbing 1.4{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} of market share in Q1-2010.

Now if you look at Smartphone OS segment, then Android and Apple are clear winners. Android moved to No.4 position by displacing Microsoft Windows mobile for the first time. Android & Apple are the only two mobile OS, who saw year-on-year increase in market share. As again, Nokia Symbian continued to lose market due to lack of killer high end device. Perhaps that’s the reason analysts are now asserting duopoly in Smartphone OS segment.
