I was often skeptical about Nokia’s ability to adopt open source model of application development for its flagship OS, Symbian. But with the arrival of Maemo, the picture started changing. Now these winds of change reached to Symbian foundation. With the release of Web Development Tool Kit for Symbian 3 (named Symbian^3), Symbian foundation has gone one step ahead, to woo web developers, to develop applications for newly release OS.
The motto is clear- if you can develop applications for web, then you can do the same for Symbian. It’s that easy and clean. According to released news:
Using Symbian’s Web Runtime Tools you can quickly and easily develop, distribute and install web applications on Symbian devices. All of this can be done using standard web programming skills like HTML/JavaScript/CSS and by exploring just a few more Javascript APIs you can directly access device specific APIs like contacts, accelerometer, and location.
According to Symbian Blog, Symbian Web Development Tool kit is an excellent entry point for web developers to broaden their experience and seize opportunities in mobile space. Moreover, there is no need to know high end complex languages; all you can start with basic HTML to make great web applications.
Till date Nokia has launched only one Symbian^3 device, namely Nokia X8 and perhaps Nokia is trying to keep things right from start for new platform. Symbian^3 Web development Kit is small step in right direction!
