If you think that Chinese hackers have accessed classified Indian websites in month of Feb/Mar 10, then think again. China may be one of the top sources of Internet hackers worldwide; India isn’t far behind. This has been disclosed in a report The State of Internet released by Akamai Technologies, last month. Every quarter, Akamai publishes a “State of Internet” report, which includes data gathered from across Akamai’s global server network about attack traffic, broadband adoption, and mobile connectivity, as well as trends seen in this data over time.
What’s in store? Let’s run an executive summary of the report:
- During Q4 2009, Akamai observed Internet traffic attack originated from 198 countries, in which 13{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} of attack traffic originated in Russia, followed by US (12{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3}), China (7.5{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3}) & Brazil (6.4{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3}). Surprisingly, India ranked 8th in the list with 3.3{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} of attack traffic.
- If you talk about global Internet penetration then in Q4 2009, slightly more than 465 million unique IP addresses, from 234 countries, connected to Akamai network, of which, 40{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} were observed from US & China, followed by Japan & Germany.
- Norway has highest Unique IP address to population ratio (0.49), followed by other two Baltic countries, namely Finland (0.44) & Sweden (0.43). This parameter is one other measure of Internet penetration in respective countries. Surprisingly there’s no Asian country in top 10.
- During Q4 2009, measured global average connection speed remained steady at 1.7 Mbps. 96 countries had average connection speed below 1 Mbps, while speed below 100Kbps is observed in three countries, less than half as compared to earlier quarter.
- During Q4 2009, Akamai observed 1.6{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} increase in amount of connections having speed 2Mbps or above. Switzerland remained at top with 90{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} broadband adoption, closely followed by Monaco with 90{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} broadband adoption. South Korea falls to third position with nearly 5{af589cdba9d77786c8c861317dbad60bba1e2ebbf56e2ffab874a1b59fde9ce3} quarterly decline. - Average connection speed observed during Q4 2009, on mobile operator’s network varies widely, from 3.2 Mbps on Austrian mobile provider to 106kbps on a mobile provider in Slovakia.
