I was really excited to read latest news that Motorola is pinching its killer iSIM technology in India and may tie-up with Indian operators to launch it soon. Apart from prospect of using four SIMs in single handset (literally using four different mobile numbers with single handset at a time), there are other benefits of this highly advanced technology, which is actually a wafer attached to your mobile SIM. This powerful wafer, iSIM, which can be controlled (programmed?) by SIM Tool Kit will also enable third party applications & services development. Not sure? Read on!
As sale of dual/triple SIM handsets is gaining momentum in India , prospect of keeping single handset for four mobile numbers and that too without changing SIM card, looks very bright. Moreover this technology doesn’t demand subscribers to stick to single operator at a time. You can use four mobile numbers of different operators and toggle your calls from one number to another. Beside that, other services like Smart Dialer, Secure Enterprise Messages (Much needed), Alerting SMS, Killer SMS and even parental control services for children makes this technology better placed in existing scenario. This technology enables the customized application development in following areas:
- Payment and banking system.
- Call control, call routing and call back system (Dual SIM applications)
- Enterprise Application with secure SMS.
- Parental control and social networking.
More over this application development will be independent of operator environment, making it suitable for launch of Operator Neutral Application Stores in India. Bipper Communication AS, a Scandinavian web-based company would be using Moto-iSIM technology, which will enable parents to monitor the child’s use of mobile phone, through a easy to use web portal, making mobile phone safer for children.
We are neither clear of business model of this latest technology, nor seen adoptation of it by other telcos. More over, how the revenue sharing model would arise is yet not clear. But one thing is sure, with advent of iSIM in Indian market, the popularity of third part application development will be on rise and may pave ways for operator neutral application development in India.
